Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a type of low-impact, weight-bearing, and aerobic -- yet relaxing -- exercise. It began as a martial art. As it developed, it took on the purpose of enhancing physical and mental health. Practiced in a variety of styles, tai chi involves slow, gentle movements, deep breathing, and meditation. The meditation is sometimes called "moving meditation." Some people believe that tai chi improves the flow of energy through the body, leading to better wellness and a wide range of potential benefits. Those benefits include:
· Improved strength, conditioning, coordination, and flexibility
· Reduced pain and stiffness
· Better balance and lower risk of falls
· Enhanced sleep
· Greater awareness, calmness, and overall sense of well being.
Classes are held Saturdays from 9:00-9:45 a.m . and 10:45-11:30 a.m.
Tai Chi lessons are taught by instructor Vincent Liu. Vincent Liu has practiced Tai Chi for over fifteen years. He first felt in love with Taichi when he saw his college professor doing the cool martial art moves. Later Vincent learned Tai Chi from Grandmaster Chen Zheng Lei (www.czl.cn), and have been practicing the martial art on a daily basis. Tai Chi has become a necessity in Vincent’s life, “I love Tai Chi. It is my favorite exercise to both keep me fit and reduce stress from work and life. I believe it is a lifelong routine that will help me maintain physical health and well-being. Therefore I practice the forms daily, just like we need to brush teeth every day and for the rest of our lives. I have benefited tremendously from this art, and I would love to share it with people in my community so others could enjoy its benefits as well.” Vincent Liu is a resident in Collierville TN.

Modern Dance
Traditionally, European and American theatrical dance centered on ballet. However, in the early twentieth century, it became fashionable in dance circles to rebel against the strictures of tradition. The first two well-known American dancers to break away from classical ballet were Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis. Although their styles differed, Duncan and St. Denis's unconventional approaches opened the door to a new era in dance history: the American modern dance movement of the 1920s. Leaders of this movement based their works on personal experience, using their bodies as instruments to express such emotions as passion, fear, joy, or grief. Rather than adhering to a set form and a limited range of gestures, as in ballet, the dancer created form as an outgrowth of his or her own communicative impulses.
Modern Dance Class is taught by Noellia Warnette-Jones, a graduate of the Alvin Ailey American Dance School. She performed in Off Broadway productions and received her BFA in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College. She came to Memphis in 2000 as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Memphis, where she taught jazz and beginner ballet. She is a 6 year veteran of the Memphis Grizzlies Team. She has performed in many local theater productions at Playhouse on the Square, Harrell Theater, and Circuit Playhouse. Noellia will be teaching jazz and modern dance at Plie, Pump, and Palette.

Jazz Dance
Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.
